Got an engineering degree or diploma sitting around, and you've been waiting for a solid central government opportunity to come along? This might be the one.
The Staff Selection Commission has just released its Junior Engineer Examination 2026 notification, opening up 1,748 tentative vacancies across a bunch of central government departments.
So What Exactly Is This Recruitment About?
SSC is India's premier recruiting body for Group 'B' and Group 'C' posts under various central ministries and departments. Through this drive, it's looking to bring in engineering professionals for five streams — JE Civil, JE Electrical, JE Mechanical, JE Electrical & Mechanical, and JE Telecom — along with Scientific Assistant posts at the India Meteorological Department.
Only candidates meeting SSC’s nationality criteria can apply, and the process is entirely online — from 2 September to 22 September 2026.
Where Would You Actually Be Working?
The postings fall under a fairly wide spread of central engineering bodies — the Border Roads Organisation, Central Public Works Department, Central Water Commission, Military Engineer Services, the Department of Telecommunications, the Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships, Brahmaputra Board, and a handful of others besides. Organisation-wise and category-wise vacancy break-up isn't fixed in the notice itself; SSC has said the final numbers will be published separately on its website.
Who's Actually Eligible?
Eligibility, computed as on 1 August 2026, varies a fair bit depending on which post and organisation you're targeting, so it's worth checking the exact requirement rather than assuming. Broadly, JE Civil calls for a Civil Engineering degree, though a few departments also accept a three-year diploma paired with relevant work experience. JE Electrical, Mechanical, and Electrical & Mechanical posts need a degree or diploma in the matching discipline, with some organisations additionally expecting prior experience.
Age Limit
As on 1 August 2026, the upper age limit is either 30 or 32 years depending on the post and organisation.
The usual reservation-based relaxations apply on top of that — five years for SC/ST candidates, three for OBC, and further relaxation for PwBD and ex-servicemen applicants. Age relaxation isn't admissible to dependents of ex-servicemen, so that's worth keeping in mind if you're applying under that category.
What's the Pay Like?
Selected candidates step into a Group 'B' post at Pay Level-6 under the 7th Central Pay Commission, with a pay scale of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400 a month. On top of that base pay, you'll get the usual allowances — DA, HRA, and TA — with the exact amounts depending on the department you join.
What Will It Cost You to Apply?
General, OBC, and EWS male candidates pay ₹100 as the application fee. Women candidates, along with SC/ST, PwBD, and ex-servicemen applicants, pay nothing at all. Payment goes through only online modes like UPI, net banking, or debit cards, and once paid, it isn't refunded under any circumstances, so it's worth being sure of your eligibility before you submit.
How the Selection Process Works
It's a multi-stage process. Paper-I is a qualifying computer-based test covering General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and your specific engineering subject, worth 200 marks, with a small penalty of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. Candidates who clear that move on to Paper-II, a much more technical paper worth 300 marks, where the negative marking gets stricter at a full mark deducted per wrong answer.
Applying, Step by Step
Complete a One-Time Registration on SSC's newer portal — an old registration from the previous ssc.nic.in site won't carry over, so you'll need a fresh one. Log in and fill out the JE 2026 application, either through the website or the mySSC app.
Upload your photograph and signature, or opt for Aadhaar-based authentication, which tends to make this step smoother. Carefully select your organisation, post, and stream, since that choice locks in once submitted.
Pay the fee online, if applicable. Preview everything, submit, and save a copy of the completed form along with the e-receipt for your own records.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Apply
Applications close on 22 September 2026 at 11 PM, but the fee payment window stays open a day longer, till 23 September. There's also a correction window from 28 to 30 September if you spot a mistake after submitting.
SSC has been upfront that it won't take responsibility for candidates who miss out because the site was overloaded near the deadline, so it's really worth finishing your application early rather than waiting till the last night.
Is It Worth Applying?
For candidates with the right engineering background, this is a genuinely strong opportunity — a respected central government post, a clear pay structure, and real exposure to infrastructure and technical work across some of India's most established departments.
With close to 1,750 vacancies on offer, this counts as one of the bigger JE-level hiring drives in recent memory, so it's worth putting in serious preparation time, especially with the computer-based tests tentatively starting as early as October.
